Supply and Demand (Orchard Gateway)
Smack in the heart of town on the 2nd floor of the relatively new mall Orchard Gateway, is the casual Italian trattoria and pizzeria Supply and Demand. It is the second restaurant opened following the success of the Esplanade branch. Boasting a wood-fired oven, this new branch features a huge variety of pizzas spanning 3 pages of their menu. And rightfully so, if the buzz it's created on social media is any proof.
Appetizer from the lunch set - mini baguette, onion chutney, cheese and salad, marinated olives
From Mondays to Thursdays, Supply and Demand offers a lunch menu at S$16.90++ that includes an appetizer and a main. With the average mains going at S$17-20++ a la carte, it is quite the steal. I managed to try the lunch set one afternoon. The appetizer was beyond expectations. Crisp warm bread, with delicious and very decent sides. The quality was a pleasant surprise given the price of the lunch set.
Carte Blanche Chicken (S$19++ on the a la carte menu) - Choice of chicken prepared the way the chef decides
A roasted chicken leg was what the chef decided on serving that day. Crispy, yet tender and succulent, the juicy chicken was perfectly seasoned and topped with a chunky herbed mushroom sauce. The sides of thick cut fries and a simple salad were also well executed. Simple, yet utterly delicious.
Carbonara Cremoso (S$17++ as an a la carte main) - spaghetti in classic creamy bacon infused sauce with shaved grana padano
Steaming hot and fragrant, the carbonara was an unfortunate disappointment. The noodles were overcooked, and the sauce had too much grated cheese. Every bite was a mouthful of soft noodles with grainy cheese. While not the worst carbonara we've had, it's a far cry from the standards set by the chicken.
Regular 9-inch pizza (S$20++) with 2 flavours (additional S$3++) - smoked salmon, and spicy shrimp (additional S$3++)
Staying true to his Italian training, Chef Samdy Kan prepares the pizza dough in-house daily to ensure quality, fresh products. This results in a thin and crisp pizza with a beautiful char, generously topped with your selected ingredients. At S$20++ they are a tad pricey, but the quality of that crust is more than worth the buck. Though inferior to the pizzas sold at Peperoni, it is definitely one of the better thin crust pizzas around.
It is always nice to see new eateries pop up around town, where eating options get a tad repetitive over time. With its convenient location, amazing food, and reasonable prices, Supply and Demand's fast-becoming one of my favourite spots to dine in town - along with everyone else apparently.
