Little Wimbly Lu: Great (but expensive) waffles
Wimbly Lu's been long agreed to offer possibly the best waffles and chocolate ice cream in Singapore. Since their opening, the Jalan Riang dessert-café has gained a loyal following for its waffles and cakes.
Following their success came Little Wimbly Lu. The smaller 23-seater branch opened at myVillage at Serangoon Gardens, offering a scaled-down dessert menu of waffles, crepes, pancakes and cakes. While the main outlet has a savoury all-day dining menu, Little has but a few toasties. We visited late one night, having barely missed Wimbly Lu's opening hours. Hoping to try the widely raved waffles and root beer cake, we finally skipping the latter which looked really stale and lacklustre.
Lemon Meringue Pie (S$7.50)
An unfortunate decision that resulted in wasted calories and cash, Little Wimbly Lu's lemon meringue pie was a sore disappointment. The marshmallow Italian meringue tasted lovely, the lemon curd was decent if not a little too solid; the tart base however was soggy and hard. Possibly the result of sitting out in the open for an entire day, which is even more unforgiving, this isn't something I'd ever get again.
Waffle (S$4) with two scoops of ice cream (S$6.50)
Fortunately their signature waffles fared much better. Little Wimbly Lu's waffles are half the portion of those at the main outlet. For S$4, you get two quarters plain with maple syrup or chocolate sauce. A tad pricey, but one bite and we were sold. Perfecting the balance between a crisp exterior and fluffy moist insides, the fragrant eggy waffles were simply, unpretentious, and nothing short of delicious.
We had ours topped with Speculoos, Chocolate Truffle, and Milo ice cream. The chocolate truffle belonged to the dark chocolate camp and was most memorable. It was just the right amount of sweet, wonderful with the waffles and some maple syrup. What most impressed was how the waffle held up despite sitting under the melting ice cream, yet was simultaneously able to soak up all that delicious liquid custard.
While the waffles and ice cream are undoubtedly delicious, they are very pricey when considering the multitude of cheaper alternatives. The waffles and ice cream may come close to my favourites at Milk & Honey Gelato, yet it costs at least 1.5 times more for a smaller portion. Thus it's somewhere I'd visit only if I'm in the vicinity; it's not worth making the extra trip down.
