Revolution Coffee

Located in the outskirts of Portsdown, surrounded by empty fields and dilapidated buildings, lies a new media hub Infinite Studios - which doesn't mean anything, except that it houses Revolution Coffee.

 

A specialty coffee joint set up by Indonesian-born Ajie Permana, it serves a unique blend by esteemed Sydney's Single Origin Roasters. Ajie, a former engineer and marketer, did his research on the coffee culture in Australia before starting Revo. So while it may take a little travelling, you can be sure the coffee is well worth it.

 

Cappuccino (S$5.50) - Thumper beans 

 

Revo's selection of beans vary on occasions, and we got to try their Thumper and Batavia beans. The former was fruity and slightly acidic. Enjoyed as a cappuccino, the coffee was well balanced and very flavourful. We had the bolder Batavia brew as a Long Black (S$5). Smooth and mellow with caramel aftertastes, it is definitely one of the best coffee in Singapore.

 

Big Brunch Breakfast (S$16.90) - Scrambled eggs, beef sausage, tomato confit, & sourdough toast

 

Complementing their coffee is an innovative menu conceptualised by Chef Shen Tan, formerly of Wok and Barrel and the current chef/owner of Ujong. It features all-day breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, and hot mains. 

 

We tried this Big Brunch which consisted of eggs (scrambled or sunny side up), a choice of bacon/sausage/ham, and a side of caramlized onions/sautéed shrooms/tomato confit, served with sourdough toasts and a side salad. Nothing mindblowing, but it was decent. Fluffy eggs and sweet tomatoes - downsides are that the toast was overtoasted and biscuity, the sausage tasted like processed starch, and the eggs were oozing water from being overheated. Far from the best, but a safe and fair choice.

 

Corned Beef Hash (S$13) - Two crispy breaded corned beef potato hash, served with sunny side up egg and side salad

 

Revo's innovative take on the corned beef hash saw it prepped like a typical hash brown, with the stufffing breaded and deep fried. Interesting textures and flavours, which would have been much better if the hash was less sweet.

 

Pancakes with Gula Melaka Butterscotch & Banana (S$13) - Fluffy pancakes drenched drizzled with house made gula melaka butterscotch, served with bananas and coconut whipped cream

 

Winning the title of Burpple's Best Waffles and Pancakes for 2013, this was the hit of the meal. Fragrant pancakes, topped with a stunning sweet and earthy gula melaka butterscotch sauce, finished with coconut whipped cream and bananas for the complete Carribean experience. Downright delicious. The batter could be lighter and fluffier as this was quite dense, but the flavours more than made up for it. I'm not sure if it is the best, but it's definitely one of the best pancakes in Singapore.

 

Revolution Coffee Affogatto (S$6) - French Vanilla ice cream over a bed of cookie crumble dusted with chocolate powder, drowned with a shot of espresso

 

The title is misleading, because this should in no way be mistaken for a coffee beverage. 2 scoops of ice cream and a delicious cookie crumble, all doused in a rich and fragrant shot of espresso - it is nothing short of the most amazing dessert. Stirred up it's like the most decadent coffee cookie milkshake. A definite must-try.

 

For the stunning coffee and great food, Revo's certainly worth a visit. In fact it's probably one of my favourite cafés thus far. The location is very inaccessible though, so be sure to either drive there, or catch the shutter bus available from One North MRT station on weekdays.
