My boyfriend can be quite the oddball at times. He hates café hopping with a vengeance; but when he finds something he likes, he wants to go back like all the time. After our first visit a month back, he fell in love with their amazing soft serves and has been demanding to return. So here we are, on a hot Wednesday afternoon, enjoying some waffles like we have no worries in the world.
Banana Butterscotch Cake, as part of the Weekday S$10 Cake & Tea Set
We decided to give their cakes a shot since we were getting a coffee. Lucky for us cause this banana cake was surprisingly delicious. Moist and soft, the cake was just the right amount of sweet. Together with the thin layer of butterscotch and amazing crumble, every bite was pretty close to perfect. If only they warmed it up just a tad.
Other cakes like their Japanese Matcha and Sticky Date looked interesting too, so probably on our next visit.
Regular Waffles (Double) with Sea Salt Gula Melaka (S$11.80), with Almond Thins topping (S$1.50)
But of course, the soft serves are still the highlights. The Sea Salt Gula Melaka was as amazing as we remembered, nailing the strong flavours while remaining delicate and subtle. The topping though did not turn out as expected. We thought Almond Thins to be simply shaved almond slices, and not brittles. They ended up being a little too sweet, especially when eaten with the maple syrup and soft serve.
Regular Waffles (Double) with Pistachio (S$11.80), with Souffle Cheesecake topping (S$1.90)
The Pistachio was the bigger surprise. Absolutely fragrant and screaming roasted nuts, it is possibly one of the best pistachio-flavoured ice cream I've ever had. Where creamier ice cream and gelatos have failed, Sunday Folks managed encapsulate such a bold flavour in a traditionally lighter soft serve. Delicious beyond words.
On my first visit I concurred that Sunday Folks do serve one of the best waffles in Singapore. While that view holds, they are definitely not the best waffles. I found the waffles today to be too crispy, so much that they do not soak in any liquids. Not the maple syrup, not the melting soft serve. What I end up with is a delicious soft serve atop crispy and a-little-too-dry waffles. It's definitely among the best, but for an awesome waffle fix I'd head to Milk and Honey instead.
That being said, Sunday Folks remains one of my favourite dessert spots, for the simple fact that they can pull off such bold flavours that others can't. And since Boyfriend likes it too, they'll definitely being seeing more of us.
