Roast Coffee & Eatery: Superb food with its coffee

August 12, 2015

Roast Coffee & Eatery's most known for its coffee, having been mentioned in several food and travel guides. As the winners of the national Barista Championship in 2012, you can be sure Roast is dedicated to pulling its customers a great cuppa joe. What makes Roast stand out from the multitude of coffe joints in Bangkok however, is the incredible food that comes with.

Found on the 2nd floor of the lifestyle mall Seen Space in Thong Lo, the casual all-day eatery features a substantial food menu spanning brunch, seafoods, pastas, meats, and desserts. They are particularly crowded on weekends, so be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment. On weekdays however Roast sees a far smaller crowd, making it a pleasant spot for catching up with friends.

Complimentary bread and butter

Right after our orders were placed, a plate of piping hot crusty bread was served much to our astonishment. I especially loved the accompanying luscious butter that has coarse salt flakes scattered all over it. Sometimes it's the little things that stand out, and this small welcoming appetizer made us really happy and excited over what was to come.

Flat White (THB100++) - Journey blend

Coffee being the main draw, Roast offers a huge range of single-origin, in-house roasted beans. Be it hot, cold, or blended; filter, French press or espresso; Roast's coffee selection is sure to please. For those not into coffee, there is also an extensive variety of juices, cocktails, teas and smoothies.

We each had a Flat White, which Roast is supposedly famed for. The coffee was rich, smooth and velvety; however way too strong for a flat white. Contrary to popular belief a flat white isn't simply a smaller latte nor a latte with higer coffee-to-milk ratio. A flat white's supposed to see the seamless mixing of hot milk, froth, and microfoam into the espresso, resulting in a creamy and silky smooth coffee. Unfortunately Roast's fell into the more-coffee-less-milk misinterpretation, tasting more like a strong cortado instead.

Corned Beef Hash (THB280++) - House-made corned beef, sautéed potatoes, poached eggs

Roast's rendition of the English corned beef hash is alike nothing we've tasted before - in a great way. The shredded corned beef was fried to a crisp, boasted a smokey fragrance, and has a suprisingly addictive kick thanks to the addition of sliced chilis. Compared to the usual sweet and sauce-laden ones we much preferred Roast's savoury dish.

Banana Pancakes (THB320++) - Butterscotch, house-made peanut butter ice cream

A stack of 3 warm and fluffy pancakes, decorated with generous slices of fresh and firm bananas, topped with one sinfully decadent scoop of peanut butter ice cream, then liberously drizzled over with a delectable butterscotch sauce. Simple, classic, yet gorgeous and absolutely delicious. Note that it is pretty huge and can be easily shared among 3-4.

Determined to try as many cafés as we could, we visisted Roast on our very last day in Bangkok and regretted it immensely. The space was lovely, food stunning, coffee great - what more could we ask for? We would have loved to return to try the other enticing mains on their menu.

For those planning to add Roast to your itinerary: most people would plan to visit Mr. Jone's Orphanage together with Roast. However you're likely to get super stuffed given Roast's extensive offerings. I'll suggest visiting them separately, seeing how both have other outlets in more accessible, big shopping malls that you'd probably stop by anyway.

If you're cabbing there, this exact Google map location may come in handy.
